Peptitler (Grekçe: πεπτίδια; “küçümencik sindirilebilirler”) teşhismlanmış bir düzende, α-amino asitlerin birbirine bağlanmasıyla oluşan kısa polimerlerdir.[1] Bir amino hamız sözıntısı ile diğeri arasındaki bağ bir “amit bağ” yahut peptit bağı olarak bilinir.[1]

Tetrapeptit (Oligopeptit)
Proteinler polipeptit molekülleridir (yahut çok adetda polipeptit zir birimi çitndırır). Yapı taşı fark peptitlerin kısa, polipeptitlerin/proteinlerin ise uzun olmasıdır.[1]

Protein sentezi esnasında her amino hamız, sair amino asite geceli gündüzlü, kırılmayan bir polimer olan polipeptid zincirleriyle bağlanır. Polipeptid kuruluşsına sıkılan amino asitlerin her biri kuruluşya peptid bağlarıyla bağlanır. Peptid bağının oluşumu esnasında amino asitlerden birinin amino grubu ile diğerinin karboksil grubu, aradan bir deniz çıkması sonucu birleşirler.[1]

Ortalama bir polipeptit zinciri 450 amino asitten oluşur.[1] Bilinen en uzun polipeptit, yaklaşık 27,000 amino asitten oluşan, kas dokusunda kâin “titin”dir. Polipeptid zincirine sıkılan amino asitlere sözıntı (residue) adı verilir.[1] Zincirin bir ucundaki sözıntı, bağ yapmamış, erkin amino grubu çitndırır ve N ucu olarak adlandırılır. Aynı şekilde zincirin sair ucundaki erkin α-karboksil grubu olan sözıntıya C ucu adı verilir.
